The islands of the Maldives are ideal for catching the big pelagics that are legendary in big game fishing, with the islands forming a vast ridge which shelves steeply to the depths of the Indian Ocean.
The coral atolls boast one of the greatest concentrations and diversities of sea life found on earth - big billfish are caught within metres of the tourist resorts. All big game fishing is based on a tag and release' policy, so you cannot keep your catch. The Maldives practices a strong conservation policy. Also big game fishing equipment availability is minimum at present and it is advisable to bring your rod and lures.
Fish caught during game fishing varies according to the weather. Inclement weather in the Maldives is uncommon but the varying sea temperature can effect the underwater currents and consequently the movements of fish. Water temperatures however never fall below 28 C, so marlin and sailfish are readily caught year round. The Maldives is also particularly rich in wahoo and several members of the tuna family and large yellowfin tuna are at their most plentiful early in the year.
There are only a handful of good boats in the Maldives, and the extensive distances between the islands make it difficult for boats based at one resort to collect clients from another. Accordingly, our current recommendation (October 2011) for big game fishing is to base yourself at Bandos as below:
Fishing is from an 11 meter Australian sportfisher: "Prowler" with twin 200hp Volvo Penta engines. All fishing tackle is provided. Prowler carries a range of Shimano and Penn International tackle from 20lb to 80lb. Prowler is skippered and owned by William Morall, a former Kenyan and will take 4 anglers and a couple of non-anglers.
An eight hour day starting at 0600 and ending at 1400 currently starts from is $750 for the boat including cold drinks and a meal. Half day hires (5 hrs) are also possible. Pre-booking of boats is essential. Should you wish to extend your fishing day once on the island, this can be done at approximately $80 per hour and this additional cost is to be settled directly with the owner.
